The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give

This week we cover The Hate U Give, based on the novel of the same name.
In this story, Starr is in the midst of finding balance in her life when her friend is killed in front of her by a police officer who mistook a brush for a weapon during a traffic stop. She has to find her voice and learn how to use it to contribute to change her community desperately needs.
While keeping lines clear between right and wrong, issues of race and police tactics are addressed. At a time when tough conversations are being had, this is a excellent film to watch with someone you care about and discuss afterwards. Which we did.
Stories are a great way to find empathy for people different from yourself and situations you haven't experienced. Netflix has cultivated more titles along this vein, not all of which address these issues specifically. They do, however, allow the viewer to change the lens with which they see the world in the hopes we can all learn something and apply those concepts in our daily lives. Here are a few, though the entire list is in the "Black Lives Matter" section on Netflix:
Dear White People
Michael Che Matters
When they See Us
13th
American Son
